Yes, it could be portrayed by someone else than a white girl who has the money and insurance to get treatment and it may be much alike 13 Reasons Why - but listen up.
We need to break the taboos. Taboos don’t go away easily, especially not when it comes to mental disorders, because people can’t see what goes on inside your head.
To The Bone wasn’t made to make anorexia adored or something people will have the will to follow. Portraying a mentally ill character is so fucking hard and really, Lily Collins did all she could portraying Eli the best that she could. But portraying a character like Eli, that’s hard. You just don’t wake up the first day of filming and say “Hey, I’m gonna go play an anorexic girl right now!”. You need to put yourself into what it means to be anorexic and how people goes through hell every day.
Anorexia is something everyone can get. No matter what race you are, no matter what age you are, no matter what, you can get anorexia. It doesn’t just hit white teenage girls. But that’s how most people who doesn’t know about it sees it - a white teenage girl with low selfesteem. And I’m sure that’s why they chose Eli to be like she is. At first, she looks like one of those girls, but there is so much more to her. And that’s what people need to realize.
To The Bone was not made to trigger. To The Bone was not made to romanticize a mentall illnes. To The Bone was made so people who knows nothing about it sees what it can be like to be anorexic. No one has the same story when it comes to such things. So before you start thinking that’s it just like 13 Reasons Why and it tries to romanticize it, think about that the movie is made as Elis story. Not yours. Not your friends. But Elis.
just watched To The Bone. highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand eating disorders better. as someone who has struggled with one for more than half her life and who has been in treatment 3 times, i can say that the representations are accurate and painfully real.
